Benefit of Native Plants:
Native species of plants have adapted to the ecosystems of Vermont for thousands of years, making them the only plants that will promote a healthy ecosystem around a ponds. These plants can provide a number of services to an ecosystem which includes supporting pollinator insects, providing habitat for wetland animals, serving as a biological control for pest species, improving water quality, attracting birds, preventing soil erosion, promoting biodiversity, and many more.

To help visualize a large plant installation, a diagram can be made that depicts a pond, any necessary features and additions, surroudning geograpgy, and a map of where plants should be, and what plants could go there. See below

How to Choose:
Depending on your desires and pond, the plants that will best serve the pond can vary. For example, some pond liners aren't always compatible with certain types of plants. To have a good blend of aesthetics and a healthy ecosystem, look at a diverse set of plants that fits your taste, as well as plants that provide ecosystem services that may be of particular interest.
